EVALUATING SAFETY AND EFFICACY OF
ACUPUNCTURE IN CANCER CARE
Presented By:
Kendra Pope, DVM, DACVIM (Oncology), CVA, CVCH, CVFT, CVTP
Program Summary:
An unfounded concern for avoidance of acupuncture for patients diagnosed with cancer or those undergoing cancer therapy exists.
The primary theoretical concern is that, by stimulating blood flow as a mechanism of action, acupuncture has the ability to lead to tumor progression and metastasis.
This unfounded theory has been disproved over and over in human clinical trials and recent research has upheld acupuncture’s therapeutic value as a legitimate treatment option in the management of cancer patients.
Agenda:
- Summarize the available literature reviewing both safety and efficacy of acupuncture for cancer patients.
- Focus on cases and research where caution should be executed, as well as special considerations that may be made in this patient population.
- Relevant research that may be the cause for concern by the conventional community will be addressed, so that a dialogue for collaboration between the TCVM practitioner and conventional oncology care team may exist.
- Discuss in detail the most common clinical conditions that are effectively treated with acupuncture when it comes to cancer patients.
With the wide array of benefits, and limited cause for safety concerns, acupuncture is a highly recommended tool that can be integrated effectively for veterinary oncology patients!
